2008-12-3 - Lunch and Depression
Recently the cafeteria owned by our company is getting crowded.  I think the reason for that is many people begin to save money for lunch.   If we go to restaurant outside,  we spent US$8 to 10 for lunch.  But we only spent US$4 in our cafeteria!

8 to 10 years ago,  Japan was hit by big depression and most salary man saved their money for lunch.  Poor salary men bought only 1 hamburger for US$1 in Macdonal for lunch. They order free water to Mac guys, but they refused poor people's orders.  That sounded sad story.

Now our company keeps our salary level.  But next year things will change.  I hope we won't get in deep depression again.

2008-11-27 - Locomotive and Christmas
Locomotive in front of Shmbashi station is dressed up!  Every year we can see beautiful locomotive with illumination.  But this year Santa Claus drives it instead of his sleigh.

Shimbashi station is famous for "the Station for Salary men" and we can find out lots of drunk salary men(not business men!) at night.  And also we can see some TV news crews to interview salary men.  Here is a typical spot to get several comments.

2008-11-19 - Venus and Altair
Tonight I watched International Space Station (ISS) crossing the sky with my son and daughter.  We checked JAXA's web site to make sure when ISS show up and fly away.  The show-up time was 6:04 pm and we were waiting the time before dinner.

It was very fine tonight, we could see Venus and Altair in the clear sky.  After 3 minutes,  we could find small star moving slowly under Venus.  It was getting brighter and It looked as bright as Altair at the top of sky!  We were exited and tried to take a movie but too small to do.

This is first time for them to watch an artificial satellite.  I think this is a good memory for them in autumn night.

2008-11-12 - Booklet and answers
Today was a special day for me!  I was a little bit nervous this morning because I took my picture for monthly company's booklet.  My company monthly issues company's booklet that introduces many activity at local plants or offices in Japan.  That is really important activity to keep good communication between them.smiley

Since this year the special program started that the cover of the booklet is full of our colleagues' pictures that show their answers on the sheets to monthly question.   My picture is for December and December's question is "what do you want for Christmas from Santa Claus".  My answer is "overseas trip"!  I wish I could spend my new year's vacation at Hawaii...It should be really expensive though.

2008-11-5 - New leader and New world
Mr. Obama was elected as the President of the United States today.  Last 8 years President Bush was teased a lot and made lots of "Legends".  He should have kept the dignity for the president of the biggest country but he couldn't have it.  I hope Mr .Obama keeps his dignity and keep changing the world. Of course we need good change.

2008-10-29 - Kitty and Dippin' Dots
Last Saturday I went to Puroland with my daughter.  Puroland is a amusement park and there are lots of Sanrio cartoon characters like Kitty and My melody.  It was not my first visit because I went there when my son was 1 year old.  He loved KItty very much and he crawled to Kitty clock in our living room when he was baby.  He was so excited when he visited there and he hugged stuffed Kitty with .  Now he is a boy, so he doesn't like Kitty any more.

My daughter enjoyed character shows and 3D theater of "GeGeGe no Kitaro".  "GeGeGe no Kitaro" is a story that "Kitaro" who is mixed between ghost and human fights against bad ghorsts.  He has famous father named "Medama Oyaji".  "Medama" in Japanese means "eyeball" in English.  He came out from Kiraro's father's eyehole and lives with Kiraro now.

My daughter loves special ice cream "Dippin' Dots" and ate it there happily.  In Korea I found it in rest area in highway.  But in Japan only Family Mart, one of the convenience store chain, sells it and we can only enjoy it in Puroland or a few shopping mall in Japan.  We believe that Dippin' Dots will be more famous than Cold Stone Creamer from the US if there are lots of shops of Dippin' Dots.

2008-10-21 - Fuji-yama and Karaoke
Last weekend our department went on a bus trip to Lake Kawaguchi at the foot of Mt. Fuji.  Until 15 years ago,  most departmet had a trip to keep good relationship between boss and colleagues.  But a long and deep recession made us forgot  the custum and mind to try to make good relationship.

I never thought I went on a trip with my colleagues in weekend before I came to this department.  They keep the custum for 25 years and the oldest member is now vice president of our company.  Unfortunately he couldn't came with us this year.  But most member thought we were lucky, especially my boss was!  Because he had to take care of the oldest member if he came with him.  My boss told us he never had the hospitality.

We went to Oshino-Hakkai, very clear well, and made small accessories with glass at craft park near Lake Kawaguchi.  At the hotel we enjoyed an open-air hot bath and good food.  After dinner we also enjoyed Karaoke during the night.

Some people told us the kind of the trip is very old fashioned.   But I believe this is really good way to make good relationship and that made us work efficiently.

2008-10-14 - After birthday....
When I came home,  I found my long sleeve shirt and jeans are left on my desk. They were got spots with chili soup last Saturday but they are cleaned up perfectly. My wife told me that the shop manager came to my house and returned our clothes with some confectionery and restaurant tickets for 2,000 yen.

I think this is typical Japanese custom and most Japanese think "He must do it".  If we got terrible happening at a shop by a employee, most Japanese would expect that we should have special apology from a shop manager with some good gift like confectionery or shop ticket.  I think this custom is too much but it would work well in Japan.  Because in Japan sometimes even a small bad rumor breaks down a big company.  If we want to get success in Japan, we have to be more carefull for everything.

2008-10-11 - Terrible birthday!

Today is my birthday.  I went to Japanese restaurant with my family for lunch.  The restaurant is cheap but clean , we go there sometime in weekend.  I ordered Korean hot soup because it has new hot level of chili and I wanted to try it.  My son ordered Soba and Udon noodle combo and my wife ordered lunch special and kids plate for my daughter.

We enjoyed lunch and finished them all.  When we were about to leave there, the trouble happened.  Korean hot soup has a portable cooking stove under a small pan to cook soup like fondu in Swiss dish. A waitress tried to put away Korean soup pot with stove from our table, but it is heavier than she thought.  She tumbled it and scattered soup on my son and me!  My son's shirt and pants, and my shirt and jeans got red with Korean soup and hot smell.

Shop manager came to us in a fluster and apologized her mistake.  He told us that he would take our shirts and pants to the laundry and returned them to us. We understood that and came home with him to change our clothes.  On the way to my house, we talk about current situation of restaurant business.  Now restaurant business is very bad for depression and their salary is very low.  He is employed by restaurant chain company but his salary is lower than old part-time workers.  That is terrible.

In Japan, most young workers lose hope to get better life in their future.  I wish we could make good future for young people.

2008-10-7 - Mr. Oh, Great baseball player
Mr. Sadaharu Oh, the field manager of Softbank Hawks in Japan, finished his career of baseball.  When he was a field player, he hit 868 homeruns that is never cleared now.  He is still called "Homerun King in the world".

His batting form is very special and beautiful.  He stood on one leg like "Famingo" before he hit the ball.  Therefore his form was called "Flamingo form."  But it is so difficult to keep balance that no one copy his form.  As a field manager,  he won the world baseball classic 2 years ago.  He became the world champion not only as a field player but also as a field manager.
He is the hero for us forever.smiley

2008-10-4 - Autumn Festival
We went to a small festival of the shinto shrine near my apartment.  My daughter bought a small toy with candy and enjoyed bouncy ball catch.  This festival is the custom to celebrate a bountiful harvest in autumn. There were lots of rice bags made of straw and small shrine on the stage.  This kind of festival reminds us that our ancestors cultivated rice fields and made our life great.

2008-10-2 - Cool biz!
Japanese coolbiz season has gone.  Coolbiz is a movement in Japan to take off our ties and set ac temperture 28 degree c in order to save energy, also reduce CO2.

I really feel sad because it should be a good way to work in relax mood. Most people love to work without any type of physical stress.  When I was in the US, every day I worked without tie and hardly found out people with ties.  Only bankers and sales persons for cars weared jackets and ties.

Most people wear just shirts and pants that are so-called busyness casual.  But I don't think we saved energy in the US.  Because there is no rule to set ac temperature 28 and you can find it 20.  That is America!
